Over the last 5 years, Eric and I have been fortunate enough to have developed a relationship with Lois Pavelka and Bill Ellison. Bill and Lois took Eric in when he wanted to learn how to farm. They allowed Eric to help with all operations at Pavelka’s Point and helped him develop Salt Fork Farms. On our first “date”, I was able to spend the day helping all of them with lambing (watching and helping the ewes birth their lambs). At one point Bill looked down at my feet and asked me, “you buy those boots just for today or did you have them?” I think I got a nod of approval when I told him they were 10 years old with lots of wear. Lois was a bit more leery after she asked, “did you patch those pants yourself, or did someone have to do it for you?” She shook her head when I told her I bought them with the patches on them.
Over the years our friendship and work partnership has flourished. Lois is the first person we will send people to when it comes to meat buying. Eric is up to Pavelka’s Point with a single phone call to help Bill and vice versa when we need help. We feel truly fortunate to have them as part of our lives.
This last year, Bill and Lois have expanded their operation to include a wine bar in Solon. Savvy is just off HWY 1 on the south side of Solon. This past weekend they brought in guest chef Matt Ghabel and had an intimate dinner at the wine bar. It was such a success, they are looking to repeat it this weekend.
